The U.S. Seventh Fleet’s command-and-control ship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) visited ports in Malaysia, Thailand, China, the Philippines, and Japan in early 2004. The visits are part of efforts to build military-to-military friendships and to encourage theater security cooperation.

The port visits included military-to-military talks and community service projects. The more than 950 sailors, Marines from the Second Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team, and Seventh Fleet staff members embarked aboard USS Blue Ridge, conducted exchanges of ship tours with their counterparts. They also conducted community service projects, and enjoyed sightseeing and cultural events.

The USS Blue Ridge is the flagship of the U.S. Seventh Fleet. Commanded by Capt. J. Stephen Maynard, the ship has advanced communications to allow the Seventh Fleet Commander, Vice Adm. Robert F. Willard, and his embarked staff, to direct U.S. naval forces in the Western Pacific. The USS Blue Ridge operates from Yokosuka, Japan, where it is forward deployed. (For more information, visit the U.S. Seventh Fleet web site at http://www.c7f.navy.mil).

The Far East Edition, the U.S. Seventh Fleet’s traditional “big band,” plays a jazz rendition of the Navy song “Anchors Aweigh” at the Kuala Lumpur Community Center, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
