UScheduled to join the U.S. Pacific Fleet in 2004 is the next generation Tomahawk cruise missile. It can be reprogrammed in-flight to strike any of 15 preprogrammed alternate targets or be redirected to any Global Positioning System (GPS) target coordinates. It will also be able to loiter over a target area for some hours, and its onboard TV camera will allow commanders to assess battle damage of the target and redirect the missile, if necessary, to another target. Launched from the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed ships and submarines, this missile will provide greater flexibility for the commander. Here, it is being tested in a launch from the guided missile destroyer USS Stethem (DDG 63). The missile traveled 760 nautical miles (1,398 kilometers) to successfully impact its intended target on San Clemente Island, part of the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) test range in the U.S. state of California.
