Lt. Gen. Victor A. Mayo, Vice Chief of Staff, Armed Forces of the Philippines, addresses U. S. and Philippine Marine and Navy exercise personnel on the deck of the USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), accompanied by the ship’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Richard Landolt.

The exercise particularly contributes to the ease with which the two nations’ militaries and their service components work together to accomplish a mission.

"This exercise builds confidence between the two forces as they work together," said Maj. Gen. Santiago Madrid Jr., Commander of the Philippine Air Force Western Command, headquartered in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. "Both U.S. and Philippine forces emerge better and more capable through the cross training they get. Our mutual interoperability is very much enhanced through combined exercises such as BALIKATAN."

Philippine and U.S. soldiers enter a mockup building during exercise crosstraining in urban operations.
