Multinational Peacekeeping Training in Nepal
Story and photos by John Fairbank

The flags of Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the United States, and the UN are raised at the multinational peacekeeping training exercise held in Nepal in January 2000.

Soldiers from Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the United States joined together in a multilateral training exercise in Nepal, 16-30 January 2000. This was a military exercise in which few weapons were fired and aggressive tactics were minimal. The focus of the exercise was on working together in multinational peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance missions.

The Royal Nepalese Army Peacekeeping Training Center is located in the rugged mountains east of Kathmandu. On a clear day, one can see the snow-covered peaks of the majestic Himalayan mountain range looming to the north. Terraced farms and small hillside settlements dot the landscape. The area is much like many of the countries where UN member countries have deployed peacekeepers in the past, thus making for very realistic training.

The two-week long exercise was hosted by the Royal Nepal Army at its Peacekeeping Training Centre at Panchkal
