Demining Thailand's Hidden Killers

Mine/UXO clearance teams will conduct a Level Two Technical Survey during clearance operations. This survey delineates the perimeter of mined locations initially identified by the Level One Survey. The marked perimeter forms the area for future mine clearance operations.

The Demining Training Center will soon begin training teams to conduct Level Three Completion Surveys. This survey is conducted once a suspected area has been cleared or determined not contaminated. The Level Three Survey, and in some cases a quality assurance check, will form the basis for deeming an area free of mines and UXO, and certified for habitation or development.

The first mine action project was launched in Sra Kaew Province in March 2000. The government selected Sra Kaew province, on the Thai-Cambodian border, because of the high casualty rates among the civilian population. The Sra Kaew project is intended to provide an integrated approach to demining that will serve as a model for the development of Thailand’s national Humanitarian Demining Program.

Operations in Sra Kaew will focus on creating a balanced Provincial Humanitarian Mine Action Unit (PHMAU) with a management structure that will oversee mine awareness, mine surveys, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Rapid Response, and manual mine clearance activities.
