A Royal Thai Marine learns how to sweep a zone for mines at the Demining Training Center in Ratchaburi, Thailan

Years of prolonged conflict in that part of the Asia-Pacific region have left a hidden, deadly threat to the people of Thailand. On all of Thailand’s borders with Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, there are remnants of war in the form of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). These hidden killers affect almost every aspect of life in Thailand.

The Royal Thai Government estimates that landmines and UXO contaminate 792 square kilometers of land along their borders. The largest area of contamination is along the Thai-Cambodian border. This 532 square kilometer area consists of fertile farmland and has the densest population of the affected areas.

Maj. Gary Forbes, USA, is Chief of International Training Division, Special Operations Command, Pacific, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii. He is the staff specialist for demining in Southeast Asia.
