Another
tradition of U.S. sailors and Marines during port calls is to donate their
time and skills to help local communities. Eighty-five U.S. Navy volunteers
from the Germantowns crew and embarked Marines performed voluntary
work for the Missionaries of Charity at three different locations in Manila.
They used 30 gallons of paint to redecorate walls, refurbish metal cribs,
and to repair and refurbish chairs. They even provided some basic medical
care, advice and medical supplies to local citizens.
The USS Germantown is forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan as part of
the USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3) Amphibious Ready Group, and had just
participated in exercise FOAL EAGLE in the Republic of Korea.
