- continued -
Chief of the Naval Staff, Adm. Sushil Kumar, presents the opening address at the International Maritime Seminar devoted to the theme "Maritime Power - Challenges in the 21st Century."

The USS Cowpens (CG-63) and her crew of 337, along with 18 members of the U.S. Navy Seventh Fleet Ceremonial Band, both based out of Yokosuka, Japan, made up the American contingent.

The USS Cowpens also brought $50,000 worth of disaster relief supplies for the earthquake victims in India and delivered four pallets of various hygienic and medical supplies from the U.S. Navy’s Project Handclasp charitable organization. Fifty-four U.S. Navy personnel put more than 800 man-hours into the project to help St. Catherine’s Home, which is both a school and orphanage. Among the donated items they brought were books and two sewing machines. The volunteers also delivered various supplies and rehabilitated rooms at the home.

U.S. Navy personnel of the USS Cowpens (CG 63) honor President Shri K. R. Narayanan of India during the presidential fleet review.
