The twenty-seventh
annual meeting of the Pacific Area Senior Officer Logistics Seminar
(PASOLS) was held in Auckland, New Zealand, from 21 to 25 September
1998. This was the first PASOLS hosted by New Zealand. The agenda
featured presentations and panel discussions on the theme, "Logistics
Cooperation: Joining Forces With Industry."

PASOLS is an international forum where senior defense logistics
officers from the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions gather each
year to exchange information on logistics and pursue bilateral
or multilateral initiatives. The seminar is co-hosted each year
by the U.S. Pacific Command. The U.S. Pacific Command's Director
for Logistics, Engineering and Security Assistance (J4) serves
as the permanent Secretariat of the organization.

A total of 27 countries were represented by approximately
110 delegates, 27 of whom were flag/general officers or equivalent.
The 27 nations represented consisted of 22 member nations and
5 observers. Following the opening ceremonies, Maldives and Indonesia
were inducted as the 22nd and 23rd PASOLS
member nations.

Member nations in attendance were Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei,
Canada, China, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, Kiribati, Korea, Malaysia,
Maldives, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines,
Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tonga, United States of America
and Vanuatu. The Solomon Islands was the only member nation unable
to attend this year's annual meeting. Visiting nations included
Comoros, Laos, Mauritius, Russia, and Vietnam. This was Russia's
first year in attendance at PASOLS. The level of attendance and
enthusiastic participation demonstrated the high level of commitment
found in all participating nations.
