U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) sponsored the 16th Annual International Military Operations and Law Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. The conference brought together over 180 senior officers and civilians from 31 Asia-Pacific nations. The Commander, USPACOM, Adm. Thomas B. Fargo, and Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle presented opening and welcoming remarks. The conference theme was Issues of Today that included hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Global War on Terrorism, and Republic of Korea and U.S. discussions with North Korea. The conference also included panel discussions and a seminar focused on the Law of the Sea and the Law of Armed Conflict. Among the attendees were nearly 40 flag officers and civilian equivalents from the Asia-Pacific region. The gathering provided participants with a better understanding of the need for legal interoperability among Asia-Pacific nations when addressing regional issues. The next conference will occur in May 2004 in British Columbia, Canada.
