Japan hosted the 8th Western Pacific Naval Symposium in October 2002. Representatives from member countries –
Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, France, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, the U.S., and Vietnam – meet biennially to discuss maritime issues and promote cooperation among their navies.
