U.S. soldiers demonstrate their tactics for clearing a trench
while members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's 28th Infantry
Regiment, 11th Division, observe. The training was part of NORTH
WIND 99, an annual, bilateral field training exercise.

The Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) submarine Lee Chun and another
ROKN ship in Apra Harbor, Guam. The ROKN ships participated in
HARPOONEX, part of a live-fire, multinational naval exercise
with the U.S. Navy during which an old ship was sunk. The Lee
Chun actually sank the exercise target.

U.S. soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment
entertain children of the Holy Family Home Orphanage in Osaka,
Japan. Material assistance to the orphanage and care for the
children is a 50-year long tradition for the American unit dating
back to 1949.

Capt. Mohammad Sahari bin hj Sapari, head of a Royal Malaysian
Navy delegation, receives a plaque from Col. Bill Wesley, USMC,
U.S. Seventh Fleet Plans and Policy Officer, while Capt. Mike
Miller, USN and other officers observe. The occasion was the
periodic staff talks between the two navies, held aboard the
USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19).
