Indian journalists toured the U.S. Navys guided missile frigate USS Gary (FFG 51) before a press conference aboard the ship during its June 2003 port visit in Cochin, India. The press conference focused on Cmdr. Tito P. Dua, Commander of the USS Gary, who was born in India before emigrating with his parents to the U.S. at a young age. A former Indian returning as commander of a U.S. Navy warship was a big story that ran in more than a dozen Indian newspapers and on several TV programs. Throughout the USS Garys three-day visit in Cochin, people repeatedly stopped Cmdr. Dua on the street to meet the Indian who had risen to command a U.S. Navy ship. I guess they recognized me from the papers, said Cmdr Dua, who has family in northern India and has traveled there extensively.
