In early April 1998, the U.S. Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) Five hosted TRI-CRAB 98 on the island of Guam. TRI-CRAB exercises are explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) exercises. TRI-CRAB 98, the second of what will be an ongoing annual exercise, involved the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Clearance Diving Team One, the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) Naval Diving Unit, U.S. Navy EODMU Five and helicopter assets (for insertions and extractions), U.S. Air Force tactical airlift and combat controllers, and U.S. Army Special Forces. The purpose of the exercise was to improve tactical logistical coordination between USN, RSN and RAN EOD forces in combined EOD operations, and to establish common procedures among the units. During the exercise the units participated in personnel and cargo parachute insertion techniques, helicopter rope insertion and extraction, and small boat and vehicle insertion and extraction.
The training scenarios involved improvised explosive devices, ordnance clearing, boobytraps, limpets, ordnance intelligence, land navigation, dive operations and other EOD tactics and procedures. The 17 participants from the Royal Australian Navy, the 20 participants from the Republic of Singapore Navy, and the U.S. participants all agreed the exercise was a complete success. |
