The Brunei sailors,
U.S. sailors from the frigate USS Wadsworth (FFG 9) and U.S. Coast Guardsmen
conducted a boarding drill. Aboard two Royal Brunei missile gunboats,
Brunei sailors conducted the mock boarding, progressing through each
drill with greater tempo and complexity. Its challenging
because every situation is different. Countries react differently.
Masters react differently. You really have to evaluate each boarding
as it develops. You dont know the dangers you might encounter,
said U.S. Navy Lt. j.g. Kristi Lehmkuhler. Although most
boardings are cooperative, you have to be ready for the unexpected.
The Royal Brunei Navy, the maritime law enforcement agency for Brunei,
says it plans to use this training to cope with illegal fishing in Bruneis
territorial waters. The training is very good, especially
the sea phases, said Lt. Redzuan of the Royal Brunei Navy.
I think we have similar approaches to search and seizure, but
we dont have big ships. So we can learn a lot of things
from the U.S.
Social activities in Brunei abounded as well. Some 30 Marines
spent a morning working with occupational therapist Jane Gilkey at the
KACA House, a day care facility for mentally challenged children, and
the U.S. Navys Orient Express band played for St. Andrews
Schools student body.
