Six countries in Southeast Asia – Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand – joined forces with U.S. sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen for the U.S. Navy’s premier series of exercises known as Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training, or Exercise CARAT.  Beginning in Indonesia 17 May and ending in Brunei 1 August 2001, CARAT enhanced naval operations between the United States and each of the six countries, encouraged cooperation and built professional and personal relationships for years to come.  Activities included everything from swapping shipboard techniques to painting local schools to forging relationships that will stretch well beyond the last ship’s parting wake.

Exercise COOPERATION AFLOAT READINESS AND TRAINING (CARAT) 2001 brought naval forces of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and the U.S. together for a series of bilateral exercises.  A U.S. Navy SH-60 Navy helicopter refuels from the USS Curts (FFG 38) without landing during CARAT maneuvers off Brunei’s coast.
