U.S. Flood Relief for Vietnam

Vietnamese and U.S. officials greet the arrival of a U.S. Air Force (USAF) C-130 carrying emergency relief supplies for victims of Vietnam’s worst flood disaster in 30 years.


The Mekong Delta region of Vietnam recently suffered its worst flood disaster in 30 years. Floods ravaged the Mekong Delta from early July 2000, killing 429 people, including 302 children. The total material loss was estimated at $263.8 million (U.S.). The province of Dong Thap was hardest hit, with a death toll of 141 and an estimated material loss of $59.4 million. Second was An Giang province with 116 deaths and losses of $53.3 million. As many as 19,966 hectares of rice and 75,297 hectares of orchards were damaged by the floods. Tien Giang Province was the worst hit in this regard. The water submerged 370 medical stations, 1,098 kilometers of national highways and 9,430 kilometers of local roads. It also inundated 12,149 classrooms, causing an interruption of school for 828,279 children.
