Welcomed by traditional Hawaiian flower leis placed on their necks and the opportunity to meet 350 local Chinese-American community leaders in a U.S. state where Chinese are a very important cultural and economic group, PLA-N personnel observed the uniqueness of Hawaii. They toured the famed tourist resort area of Waikiki, other Polynesian cultural attractions, and visited the USS Arizona Memorial, where PLA-N senior officers honored the American World War II dead.

The U.S. host ship for the visit, the guided missile destroyer USS O’Kane (DDG 77), welcomed PLA-N visitors. The Qingdao reciprocated for U.S. naval visitors.

The Chinese ships then proceeded to a second U.S. Pacific Fleet base at Everett, Washington, in a quite different part of the United States, the Pacific Northwest. While the hospitality was similar, the Chinese naval officers and personnel particularly enjoyed an American stage show during an evening gala in their honor.
