Role
players, acting as noncombatants to be evacuated, gathered at the mock
consulate compounds. Military personnel reviewed the credentials of
these mock evacuees and matched them against information possessed by
the embassy staff. While this screening portion was for the most part
routine, several of the role players, who had been instructed to become
disorderly, tested the the abilities of the military screeners. Several
role players possessed contraband items and a few of the role players
were on the restricted list, which provided realistic training for the
Thai and U.S. forces as well as the embassy staff. Once these "noncombatants"
were processed, they were transported to an Evacuation Control Center
(centralized holding area) while they awaited transportation to a temporary
safe haven. After the "noncombatants" were evacuated, the
Combined-Joint Task Force executed a planned withdrawal.
