2. One of the U.S. Navy's newest nuclear-powered attack submarines, USS Cheyenne (SSN 773), joined the U.S. Pacific Fleet's Pacific Submarine Force at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in March 1998. The improved Los Angeles class submarine carries Tomahawk cruise missiles and conducts anti-submarine warfare.

4. The Okinawa, Japan town of Katsuren, which hosts a U.S. Naval facility, presented its community service award, 17 January 1998, to U.S. Navy and Marine units for "extended and exemplary community service" and for "the many volunteer activities of sailors, Marines, civilian employees and family members ... over the past five years."
