PASOC 2002 Special Operations Forces Roles in Operations Other than War

Panel leaders and their subjects included Col. Victor Corpus, Chief, Intelligence Service, Armed Forces of the Philippines, concerning Insurgency and Counterinsurgency Operations; Brig. Duncan Lewis, Commander, Australian Special Forces, on Special Operations Forces and Peacekeeping Operations; and Col. Donald Zedler, U.S. Defense Attaché to India, on Combating Terrorism and Force Protection.

Combating terrorism was the common theme in each brief and panel discussion. "My country will be forever changed by the attacks of September 11," said Brig. Gen. Wurster. "The impact of those attacks on the people of the United States cannot be overestimated. As we look to the future, special operations will play key and increasingly important roles."

Brig. Gen. Wurster also said, "It is our hope that through international cooperation, interagency coordination, and the employment of all the tools of our intelligence and communications systems, we will be able to hunt down and bring to justice those who would conduct or support acts of terror."
