Seven Pacific Rim nations — Australia, Canada, Chile, Peru, Japan (in bilateral maneuvers with the U.S.), the Republic of Korea, and the United States — along with the United Kingdom, participated in RIM OF THE PACIFIC (RIMPAC) 2002, the largest multilateral naval exercise in the Asia-Pacific region. The exercise also included observers from Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. Conducted from 24 June to 22 July 2002 in waters off Hawaii, RIMPAC 2002 enhanced the tactical proficiency and interoperability of participating units in a wide array of multinational operations at sea.

Warships from eight countries form an international flotilla in Hawaiian waters for Exercise RIM OF THE PACIFIC (RIMPAC) 2002. RIMPAC is the largest maritime exercise in the Asia-Pacific region, involving 36 ships and submarines, 24 aircraft, and 11,000 personnel.
