The U.S. Air Force in Japan is a key combat element in the U.S. commitment to the defense of Japan under the terms of the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. For this reason, it is important to train together. The two forces are particularly complementary, as noted in another exercise by JASDF Col. Kosaku Syohda, because "they [USAF fighters] are an offensive force using offensive tactics and we are a defensive force."
