One of the oldest ongoing bilateral exercises in the Asia-Pacific region
is the COPE NORTH series. Begun in 1978, this air exercise between the
Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) and the U.S. Air Force (USAF) has
been held two to three times per year. It has been conducted in Japan
until this particular COPE NORTH, which was held in Guam. This was the
first time that JASDF fighter aircraft left Japan to conduct this important
air exercise.
