Nations Working Toward a Secure Asia-Pacific in CARAT 2007
The U.S. Navy’s 13th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2007 exercise involved a series of bilateral military exercises between the U.S. Navy and armed forces of Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Each bilateral phase of CARAT was determined jointly by the specific interests of both host-nation and U.S. forces. The exercise focused on increased interoperability through maritime interdiction, information sharing, and tactical collaboration between participating navies.

U.S. Forces Realignment to Guam: Protecting the Pacific
The U.S. decision to move 8,000 Marines and approximately 9,000 of their family members over a 10-year period from Okinawa, Japan, to the U.S. territory of Guam benefits the crowded island of Okinawa, Guam, and the U.S. Armed Forces.

Asia-Pacific Intelligence Chiefs Conference: Meeting Transnational Security Challenges
A key focus area for the Commander, U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM), Admiral Timothy J. Keating, is advancing regional security cooperation and teamwork. To that end, the first Asia-Pacific Intelligence Chiefs Conference (APICC) took place in September 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Maj. Gen. DatoÕ Mohd Salleh bin Hj Ismail, Director General of MalaysiaÕs Defence Intelligence Staff Division (DISD), and Rear Adm. Andrew M. Singer, then USPACOM Director for Intelligence, co-hosted this inaugural forum. Military intelligence chiefs from the following 18 countries participated: Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, France, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam.

Building Multinational Bonds in RED FLAG-Alaska
More than 1,300 service members from Australia, France and the United States participated in RED FLAG-Alaska 07-1 in April 2007. This was the first of a series of three [U.S.] Pacific Air ForcesÕ field training exercises that provides multinational air forces counter-air, interdiction, close air support, and large force employment training in a simulated combat environment. These exercises are conducted on the Pacific Alaskan Range Complex with air operations flown out of Eielson Air Force Base (AFB) and Elmendorf AFB.

AMC Rodeo: Improving International Air Mobility Skills
More than 2,500 competitors from 10 countries and observers from 23 countries attended the U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command (AMC) Rodeo at McChord Air Force Base (AFB), Washington State, USA, in July 2007. Rodeo was AMC’s premier event in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the 1947 founding of the U.S. Air Force.
