Japan-U.S. Forces Protecting Common Interests in KEEN EDGE / YAMA SAKURA 2007
Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) and U.S. forces conducted KEEN EDGE/YAMA SAKURA 2007 (KE/YS-07) a bilateral command post exercise (CPX) in February 2007. The two exercises merged for the first time to allow participants to focus on the defense of Japan from both ground and air threats.

Indian Navy Enhances Amphibious Capability Building Trust and Security
Nearly 300 Indian sailors joined the crew of the amphibious transport ship USS Trenton (LPD 14) in November 2006 in Norfolk, Virginia, to prepare for the ship’s transfer to the Indian Navy in January 2007. Throughout December 2006, the Trenton’s crew conducted shipboard training with the Indian Navy. “Our goal was to find out ... how they operate; take that and build on it,” said U.S. Navy CPO Jason Stanley.

Strengthening the ROK-U.S. Alliance in RSOI/FOAL EAGLE 2007
More than a quarter of a million service members from the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States participated in Exercise Reception, Staging, Onward movement, and Integration (RSOI) and FOAL EAGLE 2007 in March 2007. War On Terror ::

Winning in the Pacific: The Special Operations Forces Indirect Approach
Combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan dominate the headlines, but Southeast Asia has emerged as a quiet yet increasingly crucial front in the Long War. Given the suicide bombings in Bali, the presence of the terrorist groups Jemaah Islamiyah and Abu Sayyaf, and increased anti-Americanism,1 the need for a continued and comprehensive approach to combating terror in the Pacific is clear. The U.S. Special Operations Command, Pacific (SOCPAC) has been improving ties with regional allies and increasingly applying an indirect approach to address the threat posed by militant groups with connections to al Qaeda.

AMAN 2007: Nations United Against Maritime Terrorism
Navy ships from Bangladesh, China, France, Italy, Malaysia, Pakistan, the United Kingdom and the U.S. along with Turkish Special Operating Forces and Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel participated in Exercise AMAN 2007, a weeklong, multilateral naval exercise hosted by the Pakistani Navy. The entire Pakistan Navy Aviation and Special Services Group (Navy) participated in the exercise along with three of the Navy’s Type 21 frigates, a combat support oil tanker, and two mine hunters.

Humanitarian Aid ::

Partnership for Health in Vietnam
At first it was just a trickle of country folks, but soon a steady procession formed on the narrow, dusty roads dotted with elaborate ancestral tombs and massive water buffalos. People on foot were soon overtaken by rickety bicycles and noisy motorbikes. Just after sunrise, a huge crowd had assembled outside the clinic building. Propelled by television, newspapers and word of mouth, the excitement had spread quickly: American medical personnel had returned to help the Vietnamese people.

Partnership for Peace and Security in BALIKATAN 2007
Exercise BALIKATAN, an annual Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and U.S. military exercise, is one of many activities under the Republic of the Philippines (RP)-U.S. military security cooperation framework. BALIKATAN means “shoulder to shoulder,” sharing the load together and characterizes the philosophy and intent of the exercise.

Focus Area ::

U.S. Commitment to Asia-Pacific Security: F-22A Fighter
Twelve U.S. Air Force F-22A Raptors and more than 250 personnel deployed to Kadena Air Base, Japan, for a month in early 2007. These forces were under the operational control of [U.S.] Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) and 13th Air Force. The mission, in support of U.S. Pacific Command’s Theater Security in the Western Pacific, was part of a regularly scheduled U.S. Pacific Command rotational assignment of aircraft to the Pacific. It was also the first overseas deployment for the Air Force’s newest fighter.
