Foreword:
Enhancing Stability
in the Asia-Pacific Region
By Admiral Timothy J. Keating
Commander, U.S. Pacific Command

Dear Readers,
Welcome to the 3rd Quarter issue of Asia-Pacific Defense FORUM. In this edition, you will find articles highlighting the important interaction between U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) and our allies and partners in the region.

In our ongoing effort to enhance stability and facilitate peace through readiness, cooperation, and good will, the U.S. military remains proactive across the full spectrum of operations. From delivery of humanitarian assistance to our neighbors in need, to cooperation on and from the sea against terrorism, to deployment of the latest weapons systems in the inventory, the men and women of USPACOM demonstrate the firm commitment of the United States to this region. Our nation’s crucial engagements in other parts of the world, particularly in Central Command, have not decreased the requirements for American forces in the Pacific. The United States remains a positive force for stability in the region and, as Secretary of Defense Gates recently pointed out, “far from neglecting Asia, the U.S. is more engaged than ever before.”

As you read, you will notice almost all of what we are doing is rooted in strengthening regional relationships. Inspiring examples of the progress being made across the Pacific abound. I am excited about the immense opportunity available to build upon recent success and to demonstrate the enduring importance of cooperation and collective action in the globally significant Asia-Pacific region.

We look forward to hearing from you, the readers of FORUM. Please contact us at apdforum@apan-info.net with your ideas and comments. Please consider contributing to future issues with an opinion piece or an article that captures your involvement in the region. Remember this magazine is designed “to provide an international forum for military personnel of the Asian and Pacific areas.” We need your help to make this a useful and worthwhile publication.

Admiral Keating enjoys the song “Anchors Aweigh” at the opening ceremony of the 22nd Annual Hawaii Military Appreciation Month held at the Pacific Aviation Museum. The USPACOM Commander spoke to military and civilian personnel about the importance of the military presence in Hawaii and the sacrifices made by American service members everyday.
