KHAAN QUEST 2006:
Mongolian Troops and U.S. Marines Train Together

Two U.S. Marines participated in KHAAN QUEST not as Americans, but as Mongolians. For three months before the exercise, the two Marines – GySgt. Bruce Montoya and GySgt. Jean-Yonel Ulceus – lived with, worked alongside, and trained with their counterparts in Mongolia’s 150th Peacekeeping Battalion. The 150th is one of Mongolia’s most deployed units and many members have deployed to Iraq.

“It’s a very structured life,” said GySgt. Montoya. “We get up, do [physical training], which is usually a run followed by a series of stretches. Then after morning formation, we find out what the work detail is and run to the site. Actually, we pretty much run or march everywhere.”

During the exercise, the 150th could be called upon to provide vehicle checkpoint security or play the role of terrorists trying to infiltrate the compound. Whatever the mission, the two U.S. Marines worked shoulder to shoulder with their Mongolian counterparts.
