Foreword:
Strengthening Commitment, Capacity and Security in t
he Asia-Pacific Region
By Admiral William J. Fallon, USN
Commander, U.S. Pacific Command

Welcome to the Winter 2006-07 issue of the Asia-Pacific Defense FORUM. As you may know, FORUM has been in hiatus while we surveyed our readers for ways to improve the magazine. In response to your inputs, we revamped the format to include more in-depth articles from the region and highlighted some of the contents on the cover. Future editions will feature a preview of upcoming articles, more detailed analysis of security-related items of interest such as cooperation in missile defense and articles related to common regional challenges. We intend to include more of your ideas by advertising the theme of upcoming issues and requesting articles from around the Pacific region related to future planned topics.

In this edition, you will find engaging and informative articles, including valuable insights and lessons learned from exercises and operations such as VALIANT SHIELD, GREEN LIGHTNING, KHAAN QUEST, and BALIKATAN. These exercises strengthen the commitment, capacity and security of nations in the Asia-Pacific region. The in-depth coverage of the USNS Mercy mission highlights the superb efforts by regional militaries and civilian partners. Their activities impacted thousands of people in a very tangible way and provided a graphic portrayal of how military forces from many different countries working together can make a positive difference in people’s lives. This issue also contains other outstanding examples of our combined effort to help the people of the Asia-Pacific achieve security and stability, essential underpinnings of a better way of life.

We look forward to hearing what you think about our new approach and your suggestions for future editions. Please contact us at apdforum@apan-info.net with your ideas and comments.

May you have a prosperous and Happy New Year!
